A native of Washington, D.C., Charles has 20 years experience writing for newspapers and trade industry publications. In addition, he is an accomplished editor and researcher with extensive experience in both print and online venues.
While based in Washington as a reporter and bureau chief, Charles covered Congress, the federal courts and regulatory agencies for Capital Cities/ABC's Electronic News and Primedia's Telephony magazine. While with Telephony, an industry leading telecom business and technology weekly magazine, Charles served first as Washington editor and then as East Coast bureau chief for a combined eight years.
Since the mid 1990s, Charles, now based on the West Coast, has specialized in writing about technology and the business of technology. In 1995, he was a member of the "launch team" of Wireless Week, a highly respected mobile telecommunications industry publication. Working as Wireless Week's west coast editor, he spearheaded coverage of companies stretching along the technology corridor from Seattle to San Diego. Charles's other accomplishments include serving as executive editor for America's Network magazine and as editor of Broadband Wireless Business magazine. He also worked as a content editor for an Internet e-commerce startup.
As part of his focus on technology, Charles has researched and written several industry "white papers" and other analytical pieces. He is an accomplished public speaker, having been a panelist and facilitator at numerous industry conferences, seminars and conventions.
Charles is also experienced in other areas of writing and editing. For example, he has edited a textbook widely used to train public safety communications employees in the police, fire and emergency medical services fields. He also worked this year with disadvantaged youth in the Tacoma, Washington area tutoring them one-on-one on their writing and reading skills. In addition, he recently completed a project for Pearson Education Inc. assessing student writing and reading comprehension.
In addition, Charles works as a counselor for a leading chemical dependency treatment center and volunteers time working with foster children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.
Charles holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Montana School of Journalism and has continuing education credits in technical writing and editing. In addition, Charles is completing work on a Master's Degree in counseling.
